„...many years ago my desire was to write a piece of music that sounded Persian despite using Western composition techniques. The piece I eventually composed was characterized by polyphony and complicated harmonies, both of wich I had learned from Western music in many years of intensive and passionate study. The result, however, did not satisfy me.

Everything was right and good, but something important was missing. I took a ten-minute break and put on a traditional piece of Persian music performed on a single instrument. While listening, I was suddenly struck by the exellence of monophonic Persian music.

It needed no artificial polyphony! It already contained all that was necessary to find new expressions of Persian music. I was overjoyed to have finally found my way.

A short break of ten minutes has become a ten-year challenge.”
